A Wicked Ride

I was super excited when I first heard that Scott Moroney and crew were putting together “A Wicked Ride.” This DVD is all about how BMX freestyle came up and lived on in the New England region of America. Every country, every state and even every city has a story of how BMX came to be. Some aren’t as thrilling of stories or involve some of the biggest names in BMX as does the story of New England but we all have a similar story. And that’s what makes “A Wicked Ride” so much fun to watch. Those of us who are old enough to have run a seatpost longer than an inch lived this story ourselves. Yes the names and places are different but it is our story and the story of BMX.

New England was lucky enough to have several huge names that helped bring the region into the forefront of early BMX many times. Joe Johnson was the first person to ever pull a tailwhip air. And the story of that first one is one of the highlights in ‘A Wicked Ride.” Many also remember names like Chris Lashua and all of us know Kevin Robinson for what he has accomplished in BMX. The interviews with and about these two are some of my favorite bits from the DVD.

The DVD starts out with an over look on the history of BMX in New England including a lot of great footage of early BMX shows with the GT and HARO teams from back in the day. They did a lot of research and dug up some great clips from contests and jams as well. The video then moves into a list of the most influential riders from New England. The old school footage and stories from the first section is fun. But the more in depth stories and profiles in the second section is definitely where the DVD will really grab your attention. Joe Johnson talking about how Dennis McCoy told him that tailwhip airs were a waste of time is awesome. And the video has several of those moments where old secrets and stories are revealed.

If you are an old schooler you will definitely want to get a copy of “A Wicked Ride”. Like I said earlier we all shared this history of BMX in our own way on our own block. And that shared history runs deep and has touched way more people then we ever imagined when we each did our first curb endo down the street from our school. The images, clips and stories in “A Wicked Ride” are just too good to miss. And you riders who came along a little later. This is your roots! This is the history of the sport we all love and how it came to be. Beside learning that you will get a few good laughs at the haircuts, riding styles and massive seatposts you will see throughout this DVD. “A Wicked Ride” is definitely worth the price. It is available on regular and BluRay DVD and is a great use of $20. Go order yourself a copy right HERE
