Mike Murfitt Jr showing style made easy with a classic turndown.

I have known Mike Murfitt Jr (REEB Cycles) for many years now. He and I have spent many hours sitting in cars, stacking dirt, riding bikes and putting back a few beers. All of which have been good times for sure. We are proud to have him as a part of the PSBMX crew. Mike recently announced that he is riding for REEB Cycles and Oskar Blues Brewery in 2015 and beyond. These two ColoRADo brands are definitely stoked on riding of all kinds and support a ton of great riders and events. We decided it was time for a new interview with Mike since it’s a new year and he has a new ride. Stay tuned for a full bike check of his custom REEB that drops next week…

How did you get started riding? I always rode my bike around my neighborhood with my friends, and we’d build little jumps and have wheelie contests. I think it was 6th grade, and one of my friends was talking about how he “raced bikes”. I went home and asked my dad if he knew what that was all about, next thing I know he had an old blue Haro F5 that weighted 40 lbs for me and we were at the BMX track! From the first time I rolled down that starting hill, I knew I was hooked.

What keeps you motivated to ride? I think the thing that keeps me the most motivated to ride is progression, and the opportunity’s I get to inspire others on their bikes . I also like that I can have the worst day ever or be in a terrible mood for whatever reason, throw some head phones in, jump on my bike and it takes me to another world.

Who was/is the most influential person on your riding? I’d have to say growing up my most influential person in riding would be Matt Cordova. It was rad being able to ride jumps in my backyard with him, and his brother Joey Cordova. They both pushed me to learn new tricks but also critique my style too. The most influential person on my riding current day would have to be Chris Akrigg. I love how he is not glued to one specific discipline of cycling and he is able to do it all, and do it WELL at that.

What’s Your Preference? Street, Park, Dirt, DH, Vert, Flat? If I have to choose, it’d be dirt…But I love it all.

Which do you wish you were better at? Flatland.

What was your first bike? Haro F5

Whats your favorite trick? Turndowns and Motowhips

Where’s your favorite place to ride? Sandstone Skatepark or FOD trails

What’s your favorite event? Outlaws of Dirt and RedBull Dreamline

What’s been your best moment with your bike so far? Oo…this is a difficult one! I have many, but here are my 2 favorites: Having the opportunity to be apart of a company as amazing as Oskar Blues/REEB, it truly is a dream come true! And being able to ride Mountain bikes in Moab with my dad (Murfitt SR) on slick rock! Being able to shred with my dad is the raddest.

What’s your favorite story from a road trip? My favorite story has to be from my first trip with PSBMX to Milwaukee…We stayed outside of the city and in the lobby of the hotel we found all the local attractions the city had to offer. We were beyond stoked to find one for the Captain Frederick Pabst, founder of the Pabst Brewing Company, Mansion….All we could think was it was a party mansion, with PBR flowing, music blasting, and good times to be had….Upon arrival to the “PBR Party Mansion” We discovered we were wrong about our assumption….Everyone there had to be over 65 years old, and the house had literally nothing to do with the beer whatsoever! hahahahaha.

How do you feel about the bike scene today? There is a lot of unneeded drama, just like anything in life. Best way around it is to do your best to keep it simple, and have fun!

What type of music do you ride to? Depends on what I’m riding.. Street=rap, Bowls=80’s jams, tech=house/dubstep

What do you when you are not riding? If I’m not riding my bike, you can usually catch me at Oskar Blues Tasty Weasel, or hanging out with my rad girlfriend Cheyanne!

What’s your day job? I work for REED Group, doing Short Term Disability and FMLA….I’m Actually on the phone right now.. Shhh!

What are your riding plans for the future? I hope to travel a lot more this year, and film quite a bit more as well. I’m not super huge into contests, but I’d like to do well at a few!

What’s the best advice you have ever received? Keep it simple, and have fun!

Any last words, thoughts or shout outs? I just wanna thank everyone that helps keep the dream alive! Everyone REEB Cycles, Oskar Blues Brewery, Plus Size BMX, Evolve Action Sports Park, My Family, my dad for getting me into mountain bikes and shredding with me, and Cheyanne for supporting me! Ride more bikes, Ride bikes more!
